The Historic Amsterdam League is pleased to offer Amsterdam Icons 2016, the fifth in a series of annual calendars from HAL.  Amsterdam Icons 2016 is a color and classic B&W 12 month wall size (11″ x 17″) calendar featuring monthly photo composites depicting Amsterdam area industries of the past.  The images selected to appear on the 2016 HAL calendar are iconic in their representation of Amsterdam, images which tell the story of a “mill town” that grew at one time to be the state’s seventh largest city through the vision of its leaders and the work and pride of its people. None of the icons in these pages remain a part of Amsterdam today other than as scattered physical remnants of brick and stone, many empty and abandoned; others remain only as names in fading memories.  Accompanying each month’s picture is a brief paragraph providing relevant information and historical facts; the two-page centerfold contains a discussion of Amsterdam’s industrial history and additional photos of some of the mills that helped to make the city an industrial giant.  Scattered throughout the monthly date listings, in addition to the usual holidays and observances, are important, entertaining, and often little known dates from local history – Amsterdam’s “Bridge Day”, the death of Stephen Sanford, the day Coleco filed for bankruptcy…
